Measuring your windows for blinds and shades is easy and we provide these measuring instructions to help make it even easier for you. If you have any questions regarding how to measure properly for our products then please contact us.

Important rules to follow while measuring your windows:

  • Always use a steel measuring tape for accuracy.
  • Write down WIDTH first then HEIGHT. Do not list them out of order.
  • Measure ALL of your windows, even if they appear to be the same size.
  • Never measure an existing blind/shade for your measurements.

There are two mount types to consider, Inside Mount and Outside Mount. Please note that mounting onto a door is considered an outside mount.

Inside Mount
Inside mounted shades are often mounted within the window frame providing a clean, custom look. Inside mounts are a great way to leave an attractive window trim exposed. However, if your mounting space is restricted in width or it is between two stationary objects, even if it is not inside the window opening, then that is most likely considered an inside mount because the inside mount deduction may be required for the product to fit within the space correctly.

Inside Mounting Depth
To properly mount a shade inside the window's frame, your frame must be deep enough to accommodate the mounting brackets. If the depth of your window's frame is not equal to or greater than the minimum mounting depth for the option(s) you plan to order, then you will need to measure for an outside mount and mount your product outside the window opening.
Overhead view of window depth for inside mount
Minimum Inside Mounting Depth is the minimum flat depth required to mount a shade inside the window opening. This depth allows for enough space for the brackets to be mounted. A portion of the shade may protrude from the window opening.
  • Continuous Cord Loop (Open Roll): 1 3/8"
  • Touchlift Cordless (Open Roll): 1 3/8"
  • PowerWand Motorized Lift (Open Roll): 1 3/8"
  • AMP Rechargeable Li-ion Motorization (Open Roll): 1 3/8"
  • Curved Cassette Valance: 1 1/2"
  • Friction Fit Rail (No Tools): 2 1/4"
Flush Inside Mounting Depth is the flat depth required to mount a shade so that it is fully recessed inside the window casing and no portion of the shade protrudes from the window frame. Obstructions such as window cranks, handles and other items inside the window opening must be factored into your depth measurement.
  • Continuous Cord Loop (Open Roll) (up to): 4"
  • Touchlift Cordless (Open Roll) (up to): 4"
  • PowerWand Motorized Lift (Open Roll) (up to): 4"
  • AMP Rechargeable Li-ion Motorization (Open Roll) (up to): 4"
  • Curved Cassette Valance: 3 3/4"
  • Friction Fit Rail (No Tools): 3 3/4"

Width
Measure the exact width at the TOP of the window opening and write it down. If your measurement is a 1/16" or 1/32" measurement, then round it down to the nearest 1/8". This is the width you will order.

Example: if your width measurement is 32 9/16", then round it down to 32 1/2". If your width measurement is 54 3/4", then you do not round it down. 1/8" measurements are 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 7/8", and any whole number.
Height
Measure the exact height from the top inside edge down to the windowsill/window bottom in THREE (3) places: left, middle, right. Take the largest/longest of the three measurements. If your measurement is a 1/16" or 1/32" measurement, then round it up to the nearest 1/8". This is the height you will order.

Example: if your largest height measurement is 32 9/16", then round it up to 32 5/8". If your largest height measurement is 54 3/4", then you do not round it down. 1/8" measurements are 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 7/8", and any whole number.
Fabric Deduction
The roller shade fabric width will be less width than your ordered width based on your ordered lift type and valance selection (as shown below). This is to allow for bracket placement and proper operation of the shade. The casing around a window will typically offset this deduction.

  • Continuous Cord Loop (Open Roll): 1 3/16" (approx)
  • Continuous Cord Loop (Cassette Valance): 1 5/16" (approx)
  • Touchlift Cordless (Open Roll): 1 1/8" (approx)
  • Touchlift Cordless (Cassette Valance): 1 1/8" (approx)
  • PowerWand Motorized Lift (Open Roll): 1 5/16" (approx)
  • PowerWand Motorized Lift (Cassette Valance): 1 9/16" (approx)
  • AMP Rechargeable Li-ion Motorization (Open Roll): 1 5/16" (approx)
  • AMP Rechargeable Li-ion Motorization (Cassette Valance): 1 9/16" (approx)

To ensure proper shade coverage, please measure your window casing on each side of the window glass to determine if the fabric deduction will allow for ample coverage within your window opening. Shade fabric deductions shown above are the total fabric deduction, not per side. The shade fabric will have a slightly larger gap on the control side compared to the non-control side. For the AMP Rechargeable Li-ion Motorization the control side is on the right. If you are concerned with the resulting light gap please either order the Privacy Side Channels option or measure for an outside mount.
Important: Do not take any deductions from your measurements, the factory will make the appropriate deductions for the proper operation of your shade.

Outside Mount
Outside mounted shades are mounted outside of the window opening, either to the wall or the window trim that is around the window opening, and cover an area larger than the window itself. Outside mounted shades provide greater light control and privacy, based on the overlap you measure for. Perfect for windows that lack the required depth for an inside mount. If your mounting space is restricted in width or it is between two stationary objects, then that is most likely considered an inside mount because the inside mount deduction may be required for the product to fit within the space correctly.

Width
  1. Measure the width of the area you wish to cover (left to right).
  2. Use the "Shade Fabric Deduction for Outside Mount" chart below to find the lift type and valance option you are ordering. Add the value listed to the width you measured in step #1.
  3. If space allows, make sure that the adjusted width from step #2 provides at least 3" of total fabric overlap beyond the window opening (1 1/2" per side) to ensure proper light control/privacy.
  4. The total width you have after step #3 is the width you order.

Shade Fabric Deduction for Outside Mount
  • Continuous Cord Loop (Open Roll): 1 1/8" (approx)
  • Continuous Cord Loop (Cassette Valance): 1 1/8" (approx)
  • Touchlift Cordless (Open Roll): 1 1/16" (approx)
  • Touchlift Cordless (Cassette Valance): 15/16" (approx)
  • PowerWand Motorized Lift (Open Roll): 1 1/4" (approx)
  • PowerWand Motorized Lift (Cassette Valance): 1 3/8" (approx)
  • AMP Rechargeable Li-ion Motorization (Open Roll): 1 1/4" (approx)
  • AMP Rechargeable Li-ion Motorization (Cassette Valance): 1 3/8" (approx)

For example, if your window opening measures 35" across the top and you are ordering the PowerWand Motorized Lift with a Cassette Valance and you want 1 1/2" of overlap per side, then you would have 35" + 1 3/8" + 3" = 39 3/8" for your ordered width measurement. The total product width will be 39 3/8" and the shade material width will be approximately 38" for coverage.
Tip: If you have trim around the window opening and you want to mount to the trim, simply measure the width of the trim at the top, from the left outside edge across to the right outside edge. This is the width you will order to allow the brackets to be mounted onto the trim. The shade material will be less than this width, based on the chart above.
Important: The ordered width is the "tip-to-tip" size of the roller shade. When adding to your measured width for fabric coverage, please double check that you have the required space for mounting the roller shade. Brackets could add up to 1/8" to the final width for mounting.
Height
  1. Measure the height of the area you wish to cover, from the top of where you want to mount the shade down to the bottom where you want the shade to lower to.
  2. Reference the Mininum Flat Mounting Surface Required chart below. The height measurement from step #1 must include, at a minimum, enough space above the window opening for the value associated with lift type and/or valance option that you plan to order. You can mount onto trim (if applicable) or to the wall, as long as it provides the minimum amount of space required.
  3. If you have a window sill that protrudes at the bottom of the window, stop your height measurement at the sill. If you do not have a window sill, then measure below the window opening for coverage.
  4. The total height you have after step #3 is the height you order.
Mininum Flat Mounting Surface Required
  • Continuous Cord Loop (Open Roll): 1 5/8"
  • Touchlift Cordless (Open Roll): 1 1/2"
  • PowerWand Motorized Lift (Open Roll): 1 5/8"
  • AMP Rechargeable Li-ion Motorization (Open Roll): 1 5/8"
  • Curved Cassette Valance: 3 1/8"
Tip: If you have trim around the window opening and you want to mount to the trim, simply measure the height from the top edge of the upper trim down to the windowsill (if applicable) or to the bottom edge of the lower trim. Make sure that the trim provides enough flat mounting surface from the chart above. If it does, then this is the height you will order.
Important: Ordered height must include at a minimum the window opening height and the required mininum flat mounting surface for mounting the shade. Do not measure only the window opening height.
